Who's in Scranton. Well, in spirit, anyway.

Creation Conventions Inc. brought its Doctor Who Convention to the Hilton at Lackawanna Station Saturday, and more than 200 local fans of the British science-fiction series - some dressed for the occasion - shelled out $12 each for the privilege of taking part.

"Doctor Who" is a low-budget, tongue-in-cheek series which the British Broadcasting Corp. has produced for more than 20 years. In the last few years it has developed something of a cult following in the U.S., its exposure dependent mainly on Public Television stations - including Channel 44

Over the life of the series, the good doctor has been played by six actors. None of them are in Scranton for the convention, but one well-known series character is. the Brigadier played by Nicholas Courtney. Courtney is the only actor to have appeared with all of the first five doctors, and he is expected to appear with the sixth.

And what does one do at a Doctor Who convention? A little of everything. Besides appearances by Courtney, Saturday's agenda included screenings of several episodes, a trivia contest, a slide show, a sound-alike contest and a plot contest.

If that wasn't enough, a smattering of merchandisers featured a day-long sale of Whovian paraphernalia- "Doctor Who Magazine," posters, role playing games, calendars, cookbooks, T-shirts, paperbacks and buttons

One table was operated by Alternate Worlds, from the Fredericksburg, Md. Area. The vendor offered such esoteric items as Doctor Who annuals, some selling for as much as $75. and a colorful. 12-foot long scarf - the trademark of Tom Baker. the most popular of the doctors which sold for $60.
