1 What happens in your Doctor Who story?
I don't want to give too much away but in my story the Doctor solves a murder on his way to get a coffee for Clara. I chose to set it in the narrative space between the episodes called Deep Breath and Into the Dalek. That led me to wanting to do something with the coffee that the Doctor was supposed to get for Clara, but never actually brought her. From there I found my way to the Intergalactic Coffee Roasting Station, where my story takes place.
2 How long have you been a Doctor Who fan?
I only watched a few episodes when I was a kid but I was certainly aware of Doctor Who, especially the iconic Tom Baker scarf. However, it wasn't until after the series was revived with Christopher Eccleston that I started watching regularly.
3 What makes Peter Capaldi such a great Doctor?
Peter Capaldi does such a fabulous job of equally portraying the Doctor's whimsy, his ferocity, and his darkness. I am really excited to see how he continues to evolve this complex character.
4 Is it hard writing about somebody else's creation?
It's really hard to write about somebody else's creation —especially one as well-loved and recognised as the Doctor. I wanted the story to feel authentic to the voice and feel of the Doctor Who universe—and that doesn't come entirely organically. I had to put in some study.
5 What else are you working on?
I have a new dark faerie fantasy, which comes out in January, called The Darkest Part of the Forest (Indigo). I am also currently working on the second book in the Magisterium series, with Mortal Instruments author Cassandra Clare.
