PICK OF THE DAY Doctor Who 7.40pm BBC1

DRAMA A child of destiny flees through a war-torn landscape, the mud beneath his feet festooned with deadly "hand mines"... Clara's Jane Austen class is curtailed when she spots a passenger jet frozen in the sky... And Missy returns from the dead, revelling in wickedness in a sunny foreign square... (Hilarious Michelle Gomez turns up the Glaswegian dial whenever she's vexed: "Noo, I've not turned gooood.")

Where is the Doctor in all this? That's what Colony Sarff, a serpentine baddie who takes himself terribly seriously, is determined to find out — his search leading him across the cosmos. The Time Lord is in hiding. He has one last night to live, and is feeling ashamed of himself. But why?

As Doctor Who embarks on its ninth series in 11 years, there's no sign of fatigue. Steven Moffat gives this opening two-parter the impetus of a series finale. The Magician's Apprentice is witty and inventive, while also blithely mining the programme's past (Daleks!) — and has much sport blurring the lines between best friends and archenemies.
