BBC ban on 'Morse code' record (1965)

1965-01-29 Telegraph.jpg

[edit]

The BBC has banned a record inspired by their children's television serial "Dr. Who" because it contains a message in Morse code.

The record is the "Landing of the Daleks" by the Earthlings. It includes the call sign SOS and the message "Daleks have landed" in Morse.

A BBC Spokesman said yesterday: "We cannot play this record because we are a broadcasting organization and use SOS in cases of emergency. If this was heard over the air it might be taken as a general emergency and subject to misinterpretation.

"Scrambled" messages

"There have been records with Morse code in them broadcast before but the Morse has been scrambled. To the best of our knowledge this is the first time we have had to restrict the record because of a real message in Morse."

The record, which is by a Birmingham instrumental group, will not be heard either on television or in radio programmes.
