Spooks, the BBC series about MI5 spies, was sixth in the poll for the Radio Times.

It was followed by 24, starring Kiefer Sutherland as Jack Bauer, lost, lbrchwood, and the Sixties series The Prisoner.

Star Trek was named the show that has made the most successful transition to the big screen.

Sex and the City came third, The Simpson fifth, Charlie's Angels seventh and The X Files, recently revived with original stars Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny, 10th.

Around 2,300 TV fans were polled online in July and August this year.

Helen Hackworthy, editor of Radioriznes.com, said: "With Sex And The City's box office success this year and rumours of a Friends movie, it's interesting to see the public still choose two sci-fi entertainment shows as their film favourites.

"While Trekkies have had a number of big-screen delights, Who fans are hoping that the success of the new incarnation of Doctor Who will see it make the jump to a cinema near them."
