Who's on finally: Absent from Central Florida TV for more than a decade, his adventures last carried on Saturday mornings on WFTV-Channel 9, Doctor Who will return to the airwaves Saturday, July 13 on WMFE-Channel 24.

Most viewers probably don't know Doctor Who from Dr. Kildare, but to those who do know who Who is, this is probably the best news they've had since the announcement that there would be a Star Trek movie.

Doctor Who is a low-budget but brainy science-fiction series with an international cult following. Originated by England's BBC 22 years ago, it is still in production there, albeit with a different lead actor from the original. In fact, Doctor Who is on its sixth leading man, such changes made easy by a premise specifying that the good doctor, a superhuman "time lord," can regenerate a new mind and body when an old one wears out.

The 41 episodes to which WMFE has purchased rights are from the mid-'70s and star Tom Baker, the fourth Doctor Who and, according to aficionados of the series, the best. WMFE will show the movie-length (approximately 90 minutes) installments on Saturday nights at 10.

WMFE also got the rights to "The Five Doctors," a bonus episode in which the first five actors to play the character all appear. It probably will be shown as a special in August.
