From bad Santas to the return of The Goodies, your complete guide to the best programmes on TV this Christmas starts here!

When's it on? BBC1 Christmas Day

What's it about? The Doctor is confined to bed, suffering from the effects of his regeneration. Meanwhile, Rose and Mickey are attacked by a group of sinister Santas, while monstrous aliens the Sycorax plan to take over the Earth.

Who's in it? David Tennant makes his full debut as the Doctor, Billie Piper is back as Rose, and Noel Clarke is Mickey.

Tell me more David Tennant might have a natty pinstripe suit to wear in his new role, but the Christmas special sees him spending most of the episode in his pyjamas as the Time Lord recuperates from his regeneration. 'You can't change your entire body without a bit of angst and pain,' explains writer Russell T Davies. 'But while the Doctor's recovering in bed, a great big alien invasion starts. Just when you need him most, he's not there.' The special is the first Doctor Who adventure to be screened on Christmas Day since 1965 and Davies admits to some nerves. 'I can't wait, but I'm also terrified. For the first time we'll be up against a big show like Emmerdale. But I'm sure the Doctor will be alright.'

Digital viewers can press the red button immediately after Doctor Who: The - Christmas Invasion to take part in the Doctor's first interactive adventure, Attack of the Graske.

David Tennant says...

What's it like taking over from Christopher

Eccleston as the Doctor? The great thing is the Doctor gets to be different with every regeneration. With this part. I've got all the scope I need.

How would you describe your Doctor?

He accepts everyone on their own terms and genuinely values each individual life as important. He's an anarchist you can rely on. He's like your best uncle.

How did the Doctor's new look come about?

I wanted an outfit that wasn't too authoritarian, so I opted fora scruffier-style suit - it's more Oxfam than chief executive. He shouldn't look too slick. He has a moral authority, but there is also a randomness that's reflected in his flung-together outfit.

What does the future hold for the Doctor and Rose?

The Christmas episode is a new start. They've got to rediscover each other and decide whether they feel the same about one another.

Despite the new face, he's fundamentally the same bloke: he still has a huge amount of affection for her.
