Daleks go to market (1987)

1987-07-31 Daily Express.jpg

[edit]

THE Stock Exchange wants privatisation to slow down so that it can keep its head above the paperwork Involved.

The Docklands' driverless trains arc not ready for public service because the computers which operate them keep having brainstorms. The new System X which is supposed to revolutionise our telephones cannot, IL seems, be installed without breakdowns Something is wrong. We are getting the "enterprise culture," which Mrs Thatcher so ardently wants. But there is a distinct shortage of men to do the fiddly bits.

At last, there are plenty of people as keen as mustard to start their own businesses, embracing the world of high-tech and software. There just aren't all that many who know what to do with the spanner

We are in danger of becoming like the Daleks in Dr Who. They, you will remember, had such brilliant brains that they had dispensed with bodies altogether and went round in metal cones. Their cunning was fiendish, but they were Incapable of walking upstairs.

If we get a stock market crash soon it will not be because the world's dealers have taken leave of their senses, but because sonic incompetent engineer has pressed the wrong button.
