TARDIS & SHOW BUDGET

DOCTOR Who may have a Tardis that's big on the inside, but the same cannot be said for the BBC's budget for the show.

Despite being one of the Beeb's biggest money-spinners, with the launch being screened in 75 countries, penny-pinching TV bosses keep a tight hold on the purse strings.

And it's come as a massive shock to the new Time Lord, Peter Capaldi.

In fact, Peter, 56, says he's shocked at what show boss Steven Moffatt can do with such limited funds.

Magical

He told the Radio Times: "Doctor Who is a very intense working experience because, like most things at the BBC, there's not quite enough money and money is time and there's really not quite enough time to do it, so you are always on the hoof, pedalling as fast as you can.

"I can see that they're struggling with a lack of money and time.

"But what you also see is a great creativity, you see people working and coming up with great ideas.

"To see other worlds being brought to life in the corner of your sitting room as they flicker on the telly is just magical. "It's not sci-fi, it's not Star Trek, all gleam ing corridors and smart people walking around sorting things out.

"Doctor Who is more crumbly than that, more tobacco-stained and creepier."

And it seems even the most iconic prop of the show — the Tardis —is done on the cheap.

Peter added: "I'd never been in the police box before, apart from the wardrobe at home when I was a kid pretending. I was shocked to find it was just like a wardrobe, and there was a prop bloke and a smoke machine."

Saturday's series opener is called Deep Breath and is set in Victorian London.

The Time Lord's companion Clara (Jenna Coleman, 28) is seen struggling to get used to a new Doctor. Even a "tea date" to get to know one another better doesn't help as they end up surrounded by an army of clockwork, half-human robots.

Luckily their trusty pals the Paternoster Gang — including Madame Vastra (Neve McIntosh, 42) and Strax (Dan Starkey) — are on hand to help.

The show starts on BBC One, Saturday, at 7.50pm.
