"Dr. Who" will make its last local appearance on July 3.

Pat Keating, programming director for WFSU, said Wednesday that the mystery-cum-space-adventure show was canceled after an agreement for improved delivery could not be finalized with the BBC's distributor in the United States.

"People who have watched the show may have noticed that programs were run out of sequence," Keating said. "They probably thought it was our fault. We didn't blame anyone."

But the problems were related to the manner in which WFSU received the shows. "They didn't come over the satellite," Keating said. "The shows were forwarded from other TV stations that were airing the series. Sometimes, we would get an episode that was out of order. And once we got the film package that had an entirely different show enclosed."

The "Dr. Who" contract had been under reconsideration since November 1986.

"We tried to get the distributor to improve delivery," Keating said. "They wc'en't able to guarantee the improvements."

At $80,000 for a four-year contract period, "Dr. Who" had been WFSU's single, largest acquisition outside regular PBS programs, Keating said.
