If you gave someone a DVD for Christmas with a lot of the scenes missing, no doubt you'd cop an earful from the ungrateful recipient even if ever so politely. Well, not if they were a Dr Who tragic and you gave them this to-die-for collector's edition DVD containing episodes and rare clips they'd never seen before.
Never seen on local TV or video because in the 1960s whole episodes and segments of the Doctor Who series disappeared.
Left in a blue police box and zapped into a timewarp maybe? Well no, there is actually a more mundane explanation. The BBC junked or destroyed their copies after one repeat screening. Even the Daleks (pictured above with Jon Pertwee as the Doctor) didn't escape ex-ter-mination. So 108 episodes of Dr Who from a total 243 starring Willian Hartnell and Patrick Troughton no longer exist. But thanks to film collectors from around the world who have unearthed video transfers and original film footage, many classic scenes have been rescued and digitally compiled on this three-disc box set. In 1996, for example, footage returned to the Australian Film Censor by the ABC by law as proof of deletion were unearthed. They contain the only footage of the Macra Terror and other lost gems. All this is revealed in a fascinating documentary hosted by Deborah Watling and Fraser Hines to introduce the lost treasures collection. There's also 18 complete episodes made between 1965 and 1969 for fans to salivate over, plus commentaries to many of the partly-salvaged episodes, trailers and other memorabilia.
