A MATHEMATICS teacher who, as a five-year-old boy, was inspired by the Gerry Anderson series Thunderbirds, is conducting Yorkshire's first official college course devoted to television science fiction, writes Colin Wright.

Mr Clive Eardley, 26, above, intends to explore the moral, social and scientific impact of popular programmes such as Dr Who, Stingray, Captain Scarlet, and Blakes Seven, all of which have achieved cult status. His new course which begins next week at Wakefield Technical College has so far attracted "sci-fi" enthusiasts aged from 16 to 65.

"It is a serious subject and we will be looking specifically at science fiction in the media and its impact on today's society," said Mr Eardley, who often dresses as Dr Who to attend conventions throughout the country.

Mr Eardley has plenty of his own material to illustrate the 10 two-hour lectures he will give in the coming months. He has recorded every episode of Star Trek and has collected hundreds of videos of Dr Who.
