Doctor Who

★★★☆☆

If you want to fix the past, call Doctor Who. In Saturday's delightfully domestic episode, written by Gareth Roberts, the Doctor instead saved the future for James Corden and Daisy Haggard, who were playing two best friends afraid to declare their love for each other. (He also saved the solar system, but who cared?) Matt Smith was at his funniest but my overexposed temporary new colleague, Corden, was funny too. Incidentally, I felt for him last week when Sir Patrick Stewart went on, unfunnily, about his "belly" at the Glamour Awards. Years ago I interviewed the man who was then Capt Jean-Luc Picard, and while he pomped away about art, politics and Star Trek he bridled when I asked if early baldness had deprived him of leading-man work. "I was brought up to believe," he told me gravely. "it was rude to make remarks about people's appearance."
