Liverpool-born Time Lord Tom Baker—the BBC's Doctor Who--is to hang up his 12 foot scarf.

The actor, born in Stanley Road, Kirkdale, 46 years ago, and a former pupil of St. Swithin's School, Gillmess—has decided to quit the popular series in March after six years.

Baker spent six years as a monk, two years as a soldier, then more time as merchant seaman, clerk, hod carrier and plumber's mate, before Sir Laurence Olivier chose him to play Rasputin in the film Nicholas and Alexanadra.

He took over from Jon Pertwee as the vivid inter-galactic character as in 1974, and ever since the audience including a massive adult following, has increased.

"I loved this programme very much. It's several months to reach this decision. It's not been easy," said Mr Baker shortly before the announcement.

The series began in 1963 when the part of the Doctor was taken by the late William Harnell. He was followed by Patrick Troughton, who was succeeded by Jon Pertwee.

There were hints last night that the new Dr Who might be a woman. But the BBC were giving nothing away.

Said a spokesman: "We know who we want to replace him—but negotiations are continuing."
