THEY were once lost in the midst of space and time after the BBC cleared out its Tardis-sized archives.

But nine classic Doctor Who episodes, that have been gathering dust since the 1970s, have been found — in a Nigerian TV station's store room.

The haul includes four episodes from a 1964 story called Web Of Fear, starring Patrick Troughton.

It features abominable snowmen (looking suspiciously like actors in furry suits) trying to conquer the world by filling the London Underground with a deadly web-like fungus.

The scenery created for the story was so realistic London Underground complained to the Doctor Who production office — believing they had filmed there without permission. Doctor Who writer Mark Gatiss said: 'Every single avenue seemed to have been exhausted.

'But every now and then something turns up. To have two virtually complete stories out of the blue is absolutely incredible.'

'It's the Yeti on the underground, it's the quintessential Doctor Who story —it's the most British thing you could ever imagine,' Mr Gatiss added.

The other five episodes come from another Patrick Troughton story, The Enemy of the World, in which a Doctor doppelganger, also played by Troughton, tries to become dictator of Earth.

The episodes are available to download from iTunes today, ahead of the show's 50th anniversary next month.
