Attendance doubled at this year's event.

If you build it, they will come.

And come they did, according to Infinity Con Event Coordinator David Heringer, who said that Infinity Con 2015 drew a crowd of about 1,200 people to the Columbia County Fairgrounds Saturday to celebrate geek culture in Lake City.

The convention aimed to draw in people with interests in everything from superhero comic books to cosplaying as characters from popular movies and Japanese animations.

"It did go well," Heringer said. "People had a great time."

The crowd at this year's event was twice the size of last year's, he said.

Guests such as makeup/ special effects artist Jeh Howell and WWE Hall-of-Famer Jake "The Snake" Roberts — and attractions like Roxy the Rancor, a 17-foot polystyrene "Star Wars" creature — entertained patrons as they moved through the convention and its various vendors and art dealers.

Heringer said the panel discussions were very popular. He said he heard people talking on the convention floor about such panels as the one with actors who played zombies on the hit TV series "The Walking Dead," as well as another that showed off TARDIS replicas from "Dr. Who."

Speaking of "Dr. Who," Heringer said that he didn't realize Lake City had so many "Whovians" (as fans of the series refer to themselves).

There was also a live-action role playing panel that also seemed to get a lot of love from con-goers.

"I think they just wanted to see whatever those guys were going to do next," Heringer laughed.

However, there were some growing pains in the convention's second outing, Heringer said, and they came in the form of rain and heat. Due to some pre-weekend showers, volunteers who were setting up the convention floor had to put down all new wooden flooring the day before the show. The summer heat also boosted temperatures in the tent and some parts of an adjoining building.

Heringer said organizers have already taken those problems to heart as they prepare for future conventions.

Infinity Con's third act, scheduled for July 16-17, 2016, will span two days. Having proven themselves to the business community of Lake City, Heringer said some have already approached him about participating in next year's convention.

"We're excited about the growth," he said.

Organizers said attendance at this year's event was twice that of last year. Because of the event's success, it will be expanded to two days next summer, according to coordinator David Heringer. "We're excited about the growth," he said.
