[edit]

AS Billy Flynn in the West End musical Chicago, handsome John Barrowman has set many a female heart a-flutter. But then the man once likened in the looks department to Tom Cruise and a young Warren Beatty has always enjoyed the company of attractive women.

The former presenter of the children's TV show Live And Kicking — currently appearing with Kevin Kline in the film about the life of Cole Porter, De-Lovely — has been linked to a string of glamorous stars, including Cher, Angie Dickinson and Elaine Paige.

But by the time Glasgow-born Barrowman bursts on to TV screens next year in the new Dr Who series, as con artist Captain Jack, the 37-year-old actor could also be playing the role of fatherhood ... with his gay lover.

He is telling friends that he wants to adopt a baby with his partner of the past decade, architect Scott Gill.

He has even considered enlisting the help of a daughter of one of his close women friends who has offered to act as a surrogate mother.

For more than ten years on stage and screen, there has never been any inkling of John's confirmed bachelor status. If anything, the 6ft 1in singer and dancer has rather cleverly side-stepped the issue. When starring alongside Elaine Paige in Anything Goes, for example, there were rumours that their relationship went beyond merely dancing together. But all John would say was: 'Stuff has been written about me and older women which I've refused to talk about.'

Now Barrowman has officially 'outed' himself. In an interview with U.S. magazine Playbill, he revealed he had been sharing his life for the past ten years with two

'We met when I was doing a show called Rope at the Chichester Festival Theatre. I joke with Scott now that he knew what he was getting because for the first ten minutes of the show, I was naked.

'Afterwards, we met and click! I knew I'd spend the rest of my life with him. My parents love Scott and treat him as family.'

As for children, John says: 'I would like to have one of my own. And just out of the blue, the daughter of one of my friends said: "If you and Scott ever want to have kids, I'd be happy to carry it for you."'
