THOUSANDS of children all over the country will soon be having close encounters of a cosmic kind closely watched by Dr Who and the Royal Mail.
For the subject of the Post Office's 1982 Children's Letter Writing Competition is "A letter to Someone from Another Planet". And one of the judges is television's most renowned space traveller Dr. Who, actor Peter Davison.
Youngsters throughout the country are invited to compete for hundreds of pounds worth of prizes by writing to someone from another planet telling them what life is like in their own world. They can imagine themselves to be living in any century and on any planet.
As well as their own prizes, the youngsters can also win awards for their schools. Leaflets giving details of the competition are available at all Post Offices.
The competition is divided into three age groups under nine; nine to 12; and 13 to 16. Winners from each of the 10 postal Regions in the country will each receive £50 in National Savings and an album of British stamps. They will then go on to compete in the national competition and National Savings worth £250 will be won by each of the three national winners.
In addition to Dr. Who, the judges of the national competition will be Tom Jackson, General Secretary of the Union of Communication Workers, Leonard Pagliero, Secretary of the Envelope Makers' and Manufacturing Stationers' Association and Michael Marland, Headmaster of North Westminister Community School.
Regional judges will be announced locally.
Entries should be sent to Letter Writing Competition, Freepost "No stamp required," Room 127, 22-25 Finsbury Square, London. EC2B 2QQ. The closing date is April 6, 1982.
As well as consolation prizes for individuals, there will be cash awards to schools.
