Question: How many Doctor Who fans does it take to change a light bulb? Answer: Three - one to change the bulb while the other two argue over which of the earlier lights was best.

There's a grain of truth in this joke but Tom Baker sets the benchmark, believes Alexandra Looseley-Saul's husband Kevan, 54, who helps at The Who Shop.

His reasoning is that if you randomly ask someone in the street what the Time Lord looks like, he will invariably be wearing a hat, coat and a long colourful scarf - just like this longest-running Doctor.

But Kevan says: Being the most popular does not make you the most collectable as an investment. It is the earliest Doctors, William Hartnell and Patrick Troughton, who are the most sought after.'

Troughton did not like signing photos as Doctor Who - more valuable than signing a real name - until the last few years of his life.

A signed Doctor Who photo by Troughton might fetch £600 while a Hartnell example might go for £500. Baker has attended many Doctor Who conventions, so his signed pictures are worth about £50.

Kevan - who was an extra in an extended-cut edition of the 1972 Day Of The Daleks episode that starred John Pertwee as Doctor Who - warns that though Matt Smith and David Tennant have proved to be favourites among the latest generations, their signatures can lose value after the actors have been replaced by a regenerated Time Lord.

Kevan says: The BBC keeps a tight rein on contracts when actors play The Doctor. It can cost £150 to get a signed Doctor Who photo of Matt Smith, but now he is a free agent he may sign more.
