Who is the villain you love to hate?

THE gloves are off in the battle to find TV's meanest bad guy.

Favourite to win is EastEnders' Nick Cotton, played by John Altman, but he faces stiff competition from major-league baddies of the past 25 years.

These include Dallas tycoon JR Ewing, played by Larry Hagman, and Brookside's Barry Grant.

Also in contention are Davros, leader of the Daleks (catchphrase "Exterminate, exterminate") and The Simpson's nuclear plant owner Mr Burns. The sole woman in the running for the accolade is Bad Girls bully Shell Dockley played by Debra Stephenson.

The only real-life schemer up for the vote is Nasty Nick Bateman from Big Brother 1.

Others in with a shout are Gripper Stebson (Mark Savage), Grange Hifi; Francis Urquart (Ian Richardson), House of Cards; Alan Bradley (Mark Eden), Coronation Street; Alan B'Stard (Rik Mayall).

The results of the contest will be revealed at the end of the month as part of Channel 4's Top Ten TV series. Votes are cast by TV producers, critics and the public. A TV source said last night: "This is going to very tight as these really are big hitting TV baddies. What makes it so tough to predict is that they come from such different TV genres - the top three places will be a close run thing."

Tonight's episode will see top TV bitches including Anne Robinson and Joan Collins battle it out to be named queen of mean.
