How many of those experts investigating the recent oil rig disaster in the North Sea have thought about the Zygons?
Doctor Who is thinking about them, even if no one else is. Part I of his repeat adventure 'Terror of the Zygons' last night (6.30, Channel 2) had the warty horrors in a vessel with teeth and apparently sending torpedoes at the oil platforms.
The Zygons, who speak the usual space monsterese ("He must be destroyed" is a favorite quip) seem to have got at some of the Highland human beings and tamed them into the usual a zombie henchmen.
Heard it all before? Of course, but there lies the charm. 'Doctor Who' is as comforting as a fairy tale told by the fire. Last night's episode even ended with the old ghastly misshapen hand on the shoulder routine.
The script has the grace not to take itself too seriously, and of course the doctor gets all the best lines. Told about the oil rig disasters, he comments caustically: "It's about time that the people who run this planet realised that to be dependent upon a mineral slime doesn't make sense."
The Scottish landlord drones away at his bagpipes and mutters about evil spirits and we can look forward to a cosily corny and enjoyable series of ghillies, ghosties and things that go bleep in the night.
My only query is why the doctor's ally, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, has not been promoted yet: he must have saved the world enough times by now.
