DOCTOR Who exterminated the opposition last night by picking up three Bafta awards.

A Dalek even took to the stage and screeched: "The Baftas will surrender to the Daleks. Exterminate."

Billie Piper, 23, (Rose) collected the award but original Doctor Christopher Eccleston, 42, didn't attend.

New star David Tennant, 35, cheered from their table as the BBC1 hit won best drama series.

The show went on to lift the Pioneer audience award — the only gong voted for by ordinary viewers.

And writer Russell T Davies, 42, also won the Dennis Potter award for outstanding writing for television.

BBC chiefs were also celebrating a big comeback by EastEnders, which collected the continuing drama gong.

Ex-star Shane Richie, 42, said: "There are hills and troughs in soap. At the moment we are on top."

At last night's bash — which will be screened on ITV tonight, hosted by Davina McCall, 38 — the X Factor won best entertainment programme.

And Jonathan Ross, 45, who missed out to The X Factor, won his second entertainment performance award.

Wossy said: "F*** me, I'm surprised, but not as surprised as Noel — that's the most surprising comeback since the BNP. I would have liked Noel to win."

Chris Langham's political sitcom The Thick Of It won the 57-year-old the best comedy performance. The show took best sitcom and Langham's hit Help scooped the gong for best comedy programme. The BBC's Bleak House won best drama serial and best actress for star Anna Maxwell Martin, 27.

The cream of British TV talent partied the night away at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London. Soap babes Samia Smith, 23, Sammy Winward, 20, Gemma Atkinson, 21, and Adele Silva, 25, added a touch of glamour.

They were joined by presenter Beverley Turner, 32, Footballer's Wife Laila Rouass, 30, and Cutting It's Amanda Holden, 35. Experts watched over 200 programmes before making their decisions.
