Ready to exterminate ... armed police swoop on Dr Who crew as it films on the Thames

IT was a moment so embarrassing that the BBC film crew must have wished it could jump on board the Tardis and travel back in time.

Instead, the technicians and actors, who were dressed as police, found themselves marooned on a boat in the Thames - surrounded by gun-toting anti-terrorist officers.

The real-life drama took place during filming of the new £3 million series of Doctor Who, starring Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper as his beautiful, feisty companion Rose Tyler.

Security agents guarding MIS headquarters near the Houses of Parliament late on Monday 2 night were alarmed to see a boat heading towards them. No one had permission to sail into the security zone around the Palace of Westminster, so the result was predictable and decisive.

Neither Piper, 21-year-old wife of media tycoon Chris Evans, nor Shallow Grave and Cracker star Eccleston was involved.

Armed officers in high-speed patrol boats swooped on the film crew and actors. Insiders confirmed last night that the new Doctor Who, whose plots are a closely guarded secret, includes a storyline about river police, hence the uniforms. Film crews on the Thames normally work with specialist boat companies. But the 13-part series is being made by BBC Wales, whose film unit used a boat from Poole in Dorset and was unfamiliar with river procedures.
