TV'S new Doctor Who will be unveiled to the nation in a live show on Sunday night. BBC bosses will reveal the actor taking over from Matt Smith in a 30-minute special called Doctor Who Live: The Next Doctor.
Smith, 30, is quitting the show at Christmas after four years, and the new Doctor will appear in the 2014 series. One of the hot favourites for the prized part of the 12th Time Lord is The Thick Of It actor Peter Capaldi, 55. Bookies
Ladbrokes slashed his odds to 2-1 yesterday after a flurry of bets.
The identity of the chosen actor is a closely-guarded secret and those in the know have had to refer to the star by the special code name of "Houdini".
Executive producer Steven Moffat said: "The decision is made and the time has come to reveal who's taking over the Tardis," while BBC drama controller Ben Stephenson teased: "It's the biggest secret in showbiz. Even those working with the new Doctor on other projects have no idea they are in the presence of the 12th incarnation."
Other runners at Ladbrokes include Cutting It's Ben Daniels, 49, (4-1); Skyfall's Ben Whishaw, 32, (6-1); Homeland's David Harewood, 47, (8-1); and Luther's Idris Elba, 40, (10-1).
Smith said of his decision to quit: "I feel proud to be part of such a wonderful legacy of actors but the show will continue to get bigger and better. People will forget me."
Doctor Who Live: The Next Doctor will air Sunday at 7pm.
