An Adventure In Space and Time (Blu-ray/DVD combo) BBC Home Entertainment ★★★★ out of 5

The British TV drama Doctor Who launched the longest-running science-fiction series ever more than 50 years ago. For viewers who want to delve into the beginnings of this cult TV hit, this package is for you.

The Blu-ray docudrama takes you into the womb of the BBC and details where the idea was born and how it came to fruition -- and the DVD features the first episodes of Doctor Who.

I didn't quite know what to expect from a drama reliving the infancy of the Doctor, but I found it first-rate and now I have a higher appreciation for the original series. What the BBC was able to create in its studios back in the day was quite a feat and to think that the storyline has basically stayed the same for all these decades is really brilliant.

The idea of a British blue police box moving back and forth in time was a hard sell to BBC execs and the show was almost nixed after four episodes. Being able to see the show evolve from baby steps in the 1960s, with William Hartnell as the first doctor, to an hour-long series shot in hi-def over 50 years later is remarkable.

The drama focuses heavily on BBC executive Sydney Newman (Brian Cox) and novice producer Verity Lambert (Jessica Raine) and of course William Hartnell (David Bradley) as the first doctor. The TV drama is penned by Doctor Who (and Sherlock) writer Mark Gatiss.

There are numerous extras, including a bonus disc with "An Unearthly Child," the first Doctor Who adventure plus the featurette "William Hartnell: The Original".
