Next Friday evening BBC 1 is screening and 90 minute special featuring past and present Dr Whos to mark the programme's 20th anniversary.
But five years after playing Romana, Mary has landed a very different kind of television role. She has just recorded on new comedy series, The Hello Goodbye Man, with Ian Lavender, to go out next January. It is written by David Nobbs.
Mary says: "Men don't usually write good parts for women but this is an exception. I play a very cool career lady. He's a bit of a feminist.
"Romana was also a very independent lady. It wasn't the usual little-girl-lost tagging behind the Doctor. But towards the end of my year on the show, the scripts tapered back to the little-girl-lost and I didn't want to do it any more."
