DOCTOR Who star John Barrowman has revealed his Scots dad made him shovel COAL in a bid to toughen him up. His father, also called John, was the first non-American boss of the giant Caterpillar firm in the US.
Star Barrowman, 40, who considers himself a Scot, moved to the States with his family when he was eight.
But despite his upbringing he said he was taught the importance of work after being made to do labouring. He said: "My dad made my brother and sister and myself do manual labour.
"He said, 'If you want to do manual labour for the rest of your life you'll know that when you do, it's a choice'."
Meanwhile, Barrowman's sci-fi series, Torchwood, where he plays Capt Jack Harkness, is set to be shown on BBC America this week. And the Doctor Who actor is hoping the exposure will lead to a Hollywood role.
He added: "I'd love to do a major part in a film, that would be a dream and a goal."
