GOOD NEWS FOR DR. WHO fans: The schlocky doc will continue knocking around in time and space for another 78 episodes. That's the word from England, where Lionheart Television produces the weird series (and — this may surprise you — it's been 20 years since "Dr. Who" first appeared).
In an announcement before the North American Doctor Who Appreciation Society in Chicago, a Lionheart executive noted that for the past double decade "'Dr. Who' has been shuttling through time and space sorting out galactic problems and vanquishing monsters to the immense delight of an estimated international weekly TV audience of 98 million viewers — in 39 countries around the world."
In fact, "Dr. Who" is the longest-running weekly series on British television.
So far, 20 markets have purchased the new episodes —including Channel 54 in San Jose where the good doctor appears nightly at 8 and — in a two-hour movie form —every Saturday at 11:15 p.m.
"Dr. Who" is an acquired taste, but one worth cultivating. The special effects are ludicrous, the plots soapy (if imaginative), the concept downright cosmic. The very fact that a North American Dr. Who Appreciation Society exists tells you this is one show with a powerful cult following.
For a sampling, you might want to cultivate your "Dr. Who" habit beginning tomorrow with Part I of a new series titled "Pyramids of Mars." But don't grow too fond of Torn Baker in the title role. After 172 episodes, Baker will relinquish the part to Peter Davidson in the new package of episodes beginning in December.
Davidson was introduced to American audiences in the BBC hit series, aired here on PBS, "All Creatures Great and Small." He'll be the fifth actor to portray Dr. Who.
