The "Dr Who Daleks" on Clondalkin's New Road have, in Dr- Who-speak, been exterminated. A local councillor had threatened the County Manager with a Section 4 vote.
It's the first Village Initiative U-turn for South Dublin Co Council who are spending thousands of pounds, mostly in EU grants, on a planned revamp of Clondalkin village.
South Dublin officials may have been influenced to remove the unusual feature following a mooted and potentially embarrassing vote from councillors to overrule their decision.
But The Echo has learned that Acting County Manager, Dan O'Sullivan, actually viewed the feature outside the Church of the Immaculate Conception in recent weeks.
Most locals are concerned and unhappy with the levels of direct consultation on what they term as the extraordinary works of "art" being installed in their village by the council.
Many also agree with traffic-calming which is being targeted by the council, including Pat Kinsella, from Clondalkin Community Council, who says he is delighted to see the features go.
"Not one person has been in favour of them. Why don't they put their [council] energies into the completion of the Newlands/Fonthill Road. We'd also like to see the ones on Ninth Lock gone," says Mr Kinsella.
"I'm happy the council acknowledged that they weren't right for the area," says Cathaoirleach of South Dublin Council, Councillor
Therese Ridge who planned to introduce the Section 4.
She says the councillors were shown, and approved of, an artist's impression which indicated the features would be in stonework.
Dan O'Sullivan was unavailable for comment when going to press.
