DR. WHO, TV's space-age time traveller, is to quit after three years on the screen.

Actor William Hartnell has played the part of the grumpy professor in the B.B.C. children's series since it began.

He is quitting his flying police box and the fight against the Daleks to return to the stage and films.

He said last night : "I think three years in one part is a good innings. It is time I had a change."

Hartnell, aged 58, is an ex-Shakespearian actor and, was once understudy for Crazy Gang comedian Bud Flanagan.

Before becoming Dr. Who he was the tough sergeant in ITV's "The Army Game."

Hartnell Will make his last appearance on October 29. But the B.B.C. would like the serial to continue and are now looking for another actor to play Dr. Who.

Said the B.B.C.: "Finding a new Dr. Who will be a problem."
