DOCTOR Who producer John Nathan-Turner told Television Today this week that it "is a possibility" that the next Doctor in the BBC-1 series will, for the first time, be played by a woman. The role has not yet been cast.

Tom Baker will leave the recording of the series in January, although he will be seen until March. Lalla Ward, who plays Romana, is in the current serial, which started on Saturday, but she has finished recording.

Matthew Waterhouse, first seen in Saturday's episode, plays one of the Doctor's new companions, Adric, and from February an Australian actress, Janet Fielding, will play a second assistant.

K9, whose voice is that of John Leeson, is also to leave the series.

Like all the story-lines this season, Full Circle, which started on Saturday, is a four-part production. This will be followed by a four-part script by Terence Dicks, directed by Peter Moffat. which in turn will be followed by a serial by Steve Gallagher, directed by Paul Joyce.

A Johnny Byrne script will come next, with John Black directing, and after that Peter Grimwade, director of the the current serial, will return to direct a Christopher Bidmead script.
