British actor Paul McGann has been cast in the starring role of "Doctor Who," a new two-hour television movie based on the long-running and phenomenally popular BBC series of the same name.

McGann becomes the eighth Doctor Who since the program first appeared on Nov. 23, 1963. With starring roles spanning theater, television and feature films, McGann is best known to American audiences for his roles in "Aliens " and "The Three Musketeers."

"Taking on such a key role hasn't really sunk in yet," said McGann. "It's just beginning to dawn on me what all this means. Sylvester McCoy, the most recent Doctor Who, is a friend so he's told me everything I need to know! I loved ' Doctor Who' as a kid — William Hartnell, the original Doctor Who, used to terrifes me. My favorite villain was the Yeti, but the Daleks never did it for me — they couldn't run upstairs."

"Doctor Who" has entered preproduction in Vancouver. The movie will be broadcast on Fox later this season.
