CHRISTOPHER Eccleston, brooding star of Our Friends in the North, is to be the new Dr Who.
It is a challenging role, much more so than in the old days when the part was usually assigned to actors who were a bit over the hill, such as Patrick Troughton, Tom Baker or William Hartnell.
In those days, children did not have a TV in their bedroom. We were a one-telly-per-household nation. The programme on TV had to satisfy all the family. Dr Who had to be a reassuring older actor to whom parents could relate.
Dads could indulge in the pathetic fantasy that they were soaring through time and space with ex-Pan's People girl Lalla (who in real life went on to marry scientist Richard Dawkins).
The rest of the family could enjoy the monsters. It is fascinating that the BBC has paid out even more money than it spent on arts supremo Alan Yentob's expense account in securing the Daleks for the new series.
Whereas the old Dr Whos and their female companions seem as extinct as dead volcanoes, it is the Daleks whose acting was less, well, mechanical than that of the other cast members, and who have a mysterious staying power.
