Alan Wheatley, 84, actor whose 60-year career stretched from the classics to the title role in early British radio and tv versions of "Sherlock Holmes," died Aug. 30 in London of a heart attack

Wheatley's movies include "Conquest Of The Air," Gabriel Pascal's "Caesar And Cleopatra," "The Rake's Progress," "Brighton Rock," "Inn For Trouble," "Shadow Of The Cat," "Tomorrow At Ten" and "A Jolly Bad Fellow."

On tv, he scored in "The Adventures Of Robin Hood," a widely syndicated 1950s series that starred Richard Greene. Other small-screen appearances were in "The Avengers" and "Dr. Who" series.

Most of Wheatley's career was on the stage, starting in 1928 in a provincial production of Shaw's "Heartbreak House." He also appeared in "Volpone," "Hamlet," "Romeo And Juliet," "Othello," "Mrs. Warren's Profession" and "King Lear."

He was on Broadway in 1936 and '37 with Anthony Quayle and Leo Genn in "St. Helena"; on the West End, he appeared in Elmer Rice's "Judgment Day."

During World War II, Wheatley worked as an actor for BBC radio and as an announcer-newscaster for its shortwaved European service.
