[edit]

A fate worse than the Daleks has befallen Dr. Who.

After 13 years of time travel fighting off sundry space monsters, Autons and Krotons, the good doctor finally succumbs tomorrow night to the most insidious creature of all: the BBC2 intellectual.

Melvyn Braggs' Lively Arts program pontificates and philsophises, psych-analyses and dissects the Dr who phenomena.

It examines his morality and his motives. A consultant psychiatrist admits that his appeal is too wide to be categorised as either eccentric or immature but a women's libber dismisses Dr. Who as sexist, pointing out that all the girls in the series trip over or fall down, scream a lot and generally make a mess of things.

Fortunately the program goes out at an adult hour when the more susceptible of the Dr Who generation are hopefully in back.

But the final blow is actually delivered by youngsters at a Tooting primary school.

Asked how he imagined Dr Who will end, one of the little imps says: "He'll go through a time barrier and run out of petrol."

So there!
