WARNING to parents: make sure your children know the difference between a Dalek and a seven-year-old. Apparently there could be some confusion, so the British Board of Film Classification has decreed that the under-12s should not be allowed to buy Dr Who on DVD.

The censors objected to scenes of a Dalek being tortured and imposed the axe restriction in case kiddies transferred the dread treatment to the playground, even though they would have to go armed with a drill, a handgun and a time machine.

This nanny approach would be understandable if the offending episode hadn't already been shown on teatime TV, along with murderous shop dummies and some very dangerous zombies. Does that mean the latter are almost as wholesome as the Tweenies? I'm expecting the three. year-old's therapy appointment any day now, as soon as he stops trying to get the toaster to say "exterminate".
