[edit]

CON*tretemps 4 is not the product of a typographer's nightmare.

It is a regional science fiction and fantasy convention scheduled today through Sunday at the Old Mill Holiday Inn.

Debra Ketelsen, who will run the convention suite (also known as the party room), said activities will begin at about 5:30 p.m. today.

When the party room opens at 10 p.m., she said, the official drink will be "Altair Water." Dr. McCoy orders that in the movie "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock." The ingredients for the local version are a secret.

Those who want to spend money can patronize dealers selling all manner of science fiction and fantasy paraphernalia or the art show and auction.

Those who simply want to spend time can visit panels and seminars, a writer's workshop, a 24 - hour video room showing movies and episodes of the "Star Trek" television series, a separate video room showing episodes of the British TV series "Doctor Who," a trivia contest, game areas and "filksinging" sessions.

Filksinging, Ms. Ketelsen explained, usually involves putting new words to popular tunes. The revised songs relate an adventure or fantasy story.

Anyone is welcome to filksing, Ms. Ketelsen said. "The only requirement is that you can't carry a tune."

Among the advertised special guests is writer Vonda N. McIntyre, who has won both of science fiction's top awards, the Hugo and the Nebula.

She has written three "Star Trek" novels, including versions of the two most recent "Star Trek" movies, plus such other books as "Dreamsnake," "The Exile Waiting" and "Superluminal."

The artist guest of honor is Carl Lundgren. Among the other scheduled guests are two wellknown fans: Rusty Hevelin and Bruce Miller.

A convention membership is $17 at the door, not including an all - you - can - eat Saturday - night banquet.

A costume contest follows the banquet.

Ms. Ketelsen said there will be one rule: The costume must be something you could wear on the street without getting arrested.
