[edit]

THE BBC's special-effects workshop, where Dr Who's Daleks were created, is to be exterminated. The department, which also built the Tardis and spaceships for Blake's Seven and Red Dwarf, will close after current projects have been completed as more realistic computerised effects take over from hand-built props.

BBC post-production manager Lesley McMahon told Broadcast magazine: "There has been a steady decline in the physical effects market in recent years as demand for 3D and digital effects has increased and programme budgets have been squeezed." The department's 22 staff will be found jobs elsewhere in the BBC.
