Doctor Who provides a holiday treat with 'Doctor Mysterio'

This year's "Doctor Who" Christmas special isn't particularly Christmasy, but it is fun and sweet.
Called "The Return of Doctor Mysterio," it was written by Steven Moffat, who is beginning his final season as the series' showrunner. Season 10 begins in earnest in April with 12 new episodes.
This holiday outing — which airs at 6 p.m. today, repeated at 9:15 p.m.
in BBC America — finds the time-traveling doctor (Peter Capaldi) dangling upside down on a rope outside the New York City apartment window of a young boy named Grant, who lets him in. An old man is expected on Christmas, after all.
A bit more confusion ensues and the comic bookloving lad accidently swallows a powerful gem thinking it's a pill from the doctor. It suddenly gives him special powers. Fast-forward 24 years and Grant (now played by Justin Chatwin) has become something of a Clark Kent, except he's a nanny with a superhero alter ego.
He even has his own Lois Lane named Lucy (Charity Wakefield), the reporter he baby-sits for who has a fascination with the identity of the superhero she doesn't realize is right under her nose. While investigating a giant corporation's suspicious dealings, Lucy finds herself crossing paths with the Doctor and Grant's masked superhero.
Best to leave the rest of the story's details vague, but you can expect some nefarious aliens to appear. Matt Lucas' Nardole also pops up to help the Doctor. He once worked for the time-traveler's great love, River Song.
Capaldi is his usual terrific self as the Doctor, who — as Nardole describes him — is "very brave and very silly and for a long time very sad." But the episode succeeds because Moffat keeps
