[edit]

ACTOR Patrick Troughton, the second Dr Who, died after suffering a heart attack at a Dr Who convention in the U.S. last night.

He was appearing at the convention in Georgia with Colin Baker, who quit as the Doctor in the long-running series earlier this year.

Troughton was rushed to hospital in Columbus, Georgia, after collapsing and died soon after.

The 67-year-old actor played the Doctor from 1966 to 1969, but was also an accomplished Shakespearean actor.

Since giving up the sci-fi role, he has attended many Dr Who conventions in Britain and abroad.

He leaves his third wife Sheila, six children -- two of them actors -- and two step-children.

Last night John Mathan-Turner, producer of the Dr Who series, said: 'Patrick will be sorely missed by the acting profession in general and the Dr Who family in particular.

'He was an actor of tremendous integrity with a natural sense of fun. The profession is deprived of one of its true professionals.'

Troughton returned to play the part of Dr Who for the 10th anniversary of the show in 1973 and the 20th anniversary in 1983.
