Tennant Wins Poll To Find Favourite Timelord

DOCTOR Who fans have named David Tennant their best-ever Timelord.

The Scot, who made his debut last Christmas, beat off competition from Tom Baker and predecessor Christopher Eccleston to take the top spot.

Baker, 72, who played the character between 1974 and 1981, had been selected as the fans' favourite in every previous poll conducted by the Doctor Who magazine.

But he was narrowly beaten this year by Tennant, 35, who received 28% of the votes cast in a survey of 4,000 readers.

Last night Tennant, from Bathgate, West Lothian, said: "This is a real honour for me. I'm totally gobsmacked."

Doctor Who magazine editor Clayton Hickman said: "This is an incredible result for David and shows how quickly viewers have taken to him.

"The iconic image of Doctor Who has always been of Tom Baker in his floppy hat and long, multi-coloured scarf but it looks like that has been replaced."

Eccleston, 42, who left after just one series came third, while Paul McGann received the fewest votes of the 10 actors to play the Doctor on TV.

Readers voted Billie Piper their favourite Doctor Who assistant, in the role of Rose Tyler.

In second place was 1970s companion Sarah Jane Smith, played by Elisabeth Sladen.

She is due to return to in a spin-off series, The Sarah Jane Adventures, over Christmas.

A new Doctor Who episode, The Runaway Bride, will be also shown on BBC One this Christmas, with a guest appearance from comedian Catherine Tate, 38.

Freema Agyeman, 27, will be introduced as the Doctor's new companion Martha Jones in 2007, following Billie's departure this year.
