FORMER "Dr Who" star Tom Baker has split after only 16 months of marriage from actress Lalla Ward, who once played his assistant Romana.

Gangling 6ft 3in Tom, 47, interrupted rehearsals for "Hedda Gabler" in a Chelsea church hall yesterday to confirm : "I am very sorry to have to tell you that It's true. I'm still where I have always lived. She has moved out."

He added : "I would be dishonest if I said I thought this was either a permanent or a temporary situation. I don't know. But one always hopes things will resolve themselves happily."

Not far away in Pimlico a sad-faced Lalla, 16 years his junior and the daughter of Viscount Bangor, was rehearsing the Pope's play, "The Jeweller's Shop."

Ironically the play Is about three couples and their relationships and will open at the Westminster Theatre on May 25, a few days before the Pontiff is due to arrive for his visit here.

Lalla would only say " I am amazed he told you. I really don't know if it's permanent. I just don't want to discuss it."

I am told that the split was recent and nobody else is involved.

Tom was brought up in Liverpool among Irish pubs, and Irish priests with aspirations to being a monk.

He has two teenage sons Daniel and Piers by his 1960 marriage to Anna, daughter of the late rose grower Harry Wheatcroft. That ended in divorce.

Lalla (christened Sarah) Is the only daughter of former BBC war correspondent Eddie Bangor and his fourth wife Marjorie.

She	once said : "I'll never get involved with an actor."
