He's one of those tele-faces everyone knows, but can't always put a name to.

But German born Frederick Jaeger isn't particularly bothered by the recognition bit. He's grateful for the 23 years of virtually continuous TV work and is now making a return to theatre for the first time in five years.

He plays Professor George Moore Tom Stoppard's 'metaphysical farce' Jumpers, which starts a three-week run at Liverpool Playhouse tomorrow.

Jaeger has arrived on Merseyside straight from filming a bilingual war film for a German company in the Ardennes -- and he's brought a cold with him.

In this country his television credits include "German officers in almost every programme in which they've been needed, as well as parts in series such as The Pretenders, Special Branch and Fall of Eagles.

Among his serious film commentaries has been the three-hour B.B.C. special following the death of Mao Tse Tung.

Right now he's doing a third series of Oneupmanship for the B.B.C.

And this Saturday he'll be giving the illusion of being in three places at once: Dr. Who viewers will see him as the scientist Marius, owner of robot dog K9; later in the evening he'll be appearing in Dick Emery Show, and at the same time, be treading the boards at the Playhouse.

"Returning to the theatre to do a play like Jumpers is rather jumping in the deep end. It's a difficult part, but I've learned and I hope it works.
