DRAMA OF THE WEEK Doctor Who showrunner Chris Chibnall was unequivocal in RT two weeks ago — his Doctor Who is for everyone, not just the fandom. If you've never watched before, then join in: no hinterland and no arcane knowledge of its mighty history are needed.

Jodie Whittaker glows with fun and (two) heart(s) as the new Doctor, crash-landing through the roof of a stranded train after her regeneration. There are a couple of sly little nods to her gender ("Why are you calling me Madam?" she asks a baffled bystander) but really, she's just the Doctor.

The first, self-contained rollicking adventure, pits the Doctor and her new band of companions — Bradley Walsh, Mandip Gill and Tosin Cole — against a beast stalking the streets of Sheffield. What Sheffield has done to deserve this eventually becomes clear. It's a wild, thrilling ride packed with incident as Whittaker's Doctor gets to grips with a new life and a new wardrobe.
