LONDON (AP) Julia Smith, co-creator of the soap opera "EastEnders" about the everyday lives of working class Londoners, died Thursday. She was in her mid-60s.

Ms. Smith and Tony Holland co-produced the show, which made its British Broadcasting Corp. debut in February 1985 and was watched by millions.

Colleagues nicknamed Ms. Smith the "queen of soaps" after more than 30 million viewers more than half Britain's population watched a Christmas edition of "EastEnders" in 1986.

Ms. Smith laid down strict rules of behavior for her actors in "EastEnders," banning limousines and ordering them to eat in staff canteens.

In the 1960s and 1970s, Ms. Smith directed popular BBC series like "Dr. Finlay's Casebook," "Dr. Who," "Z Cars" and "The Railway Children."
