LPB DRIVE: Louisiana Public Broadcasting will begin Winterfest, its combination of holiday programming and membership drive, on Sunday, Nov. 29. WLPB officials have set a goal of $175,000, which they hope to raise by pledging 2,900 new members.

Winterfest's lineup includes Christmas specials ranging from the Mormon Tabernacle Choir to science-fiction movies and dance programs.

During last winter's fund drive, LPB was able to raise $153,000 in pledges from 2,500 people. This year's drive will last three nights longer than last year.

A special highlight of Winterfest for Baton Rouge Dr. Who fans will be an appearance by former Dr. Who Jon Pertwee. Pertwee may be making some surprise appearances during LPB's pledge breaks, and there will be a Dr. Who exhibit at Esplanade Mall from Dec. 12-13. Tickets to the exhibit are $5, with children under 5 admitted free. In connection with Pertwee's appearances, LPB will air a sci-fi extravaganza on Dec. 12.

Some of the other special programs LPB will be airing as part of Winterfest are Remembering Bing, a retrospective tribute to Bing Crosby hosted by Dorothy Lamour on Monday, Nov. 30, and that holiday standard, The Nutcracker, starring Gelsey Kirkland and Mikhail Baryshnikov on Wednesday, Dec. 2.

For Beatles fans, Saturday, Dec. 5, is the date to mark on your calendar. LPB will be showing The Compleat Beatles, followed by Sgt. Pepper: It Was 20 Years Ago Today, a retrospective look at the album and the year 1967.

That's Dancing, which chronicles the history of dance with host Gene Kelly, will be shown Monday, Dec. 7. And anybody who needs help on the holiday menu should tune in to Justin Wilson's Louisiana Cookin' Holiday Special on Friday, Dec. 11.

If you've ever found yourself chuckling in amusement at the devoted tiger-worship of LSU fans, don't miss Men of LSU on Friday, Dec. 11. The show takes a light-hearted look at some of what have to be America's most devoted football fans.

A science-fiction extravaganza is planned for Saturday, Dec. 12, with two Dr. Who movies, Planet of the Daleks and Death to the Daleks. A special presentation of four hours of Fawlty Towers also will be airing Saturday, Dec. 12.
