Destiny of the Daleks

Name: Nigel Parkes

Age: 38

Lives: Kidderminster

By day: Special effects prop builder

By night: Dalek fan

'I still can't put my finger on what the fascination is. After all, Daleks have got a sink plunger for one arm, an egg whisk for the other and one eye stalk you could snap off in your hand. They get stuck in doors and can't move upstairs. It must all go back to my childhood. I first tried to build a Dalek for a school project when I was 12, armed with a set of plans the BBC had issued and a box of bits, but by the end of term, that's still all it was. I had another go when I was 24 and was better equipped for the task, as I had already been running my own business building kit cars. Now I build Daleks under licence for the BBC. I've got seven full-size ones, two dozen smaller scale ones and countless models. Some are in the spare room but most are at my workshop. My girlfriend is understanding. She doesn't see the appeal herself, but I think she respects the way I've built a business out of it. At least I have a girlfriend. And I don't live with my mother either, so I can't be that sad.'
