Meeting the faces behind the words of 'Dr. Who' and 'Tamworth Pig'

"DR. WHO" writer Terrance Dicks and Wigginton-born author Mrs. Gene Kemp are among personalities coming to Tamworth to National Children's Book Week.
Aim of the week, starting tomorrow, is to show parents, children and teachers what's new in children's books - and encourage more people to turn to books when shopping around for presents for young friends and relatives.
National Book Week is held every year, but this is the first time that Tamworth has marked it in a big way.
"We wanted to do something a bit special because there is so much available for children now," said Principal Area Librarian Mr. Colin Williams.
Storytime sessions are being held for the under-fives at the Central Library every morning next week, and on Thursday afternoon.
And a "junior bookshop" will be open each day from 10am to 5pm at Moorgate Junior School, Hospital Street.
A wide range of hardbacks and paperbacks for children are being provided for the shop by the Lichfield booksellers James Redshaw Ltd.
Most of the authors visiting Tamworth schools during the week will spend some time at the shop, and autograph copies of their books for purchasers.
Gene Kemp, a trained teacher, now lives in Exeter. Her first book, "The Prime of Tamworth Pig", came out in 1972.

Mrs. Kemp's latest book, "The Turbulent Term Of Tyke Tilar", was acclaimed by the Library Association as the outstanding book for children published during 1977 Joining Mrs. Kemp and Terrance Dicks, who writes a many of the highly successful "Dr. Who" books - will be dozen fellow authors and storytellers.
Among them are Diana Pullein-Thompson, author of more than 20 pony books, the sci-fi writer Hugh Walters, Walsall teacher David Calcutt, who freelances for BBC Radio Birmingham, and Peter Eldin, whose books are all about magic, illusions, tricks, and puzzles.
Next Friday evening, the professional Birmingham-based Macnaghten Theatre Company are presenting a public performance of their show "Curtain Call" at Woodhouse Comprehensive.
Devised and written by the company, the show takes a lively look at aspects of the and work as depicted in literature and drama.
The performance has been arranged by the Friends of Woodhouse.
