[edit]

FIRST female Doctor Who Jodie Whittaker has told of her pride that girls can now dream of being in charge of the Tardis - and not just a companion.

The 36-year-old Broadchurch star, who has taken over as Doctor Who from Peter Capaldi and will star in her first series in the autumn, said it was an honour to win the role.

She said of the role: "Now it isn't just attainable for half of the population. The other half can be the Doctor as well.

"Girls will no longer just think, 'Oh, I could be a companion: Being the first female Doctor is a huge honour for me'

And given that Doctor Who began in 1963, new show boss Chris Chibnall said it "felt the time was right for a female Doctor", adding: "I felt the audience were ready for it, the world was ready for it.

"If we hadn't done it, we would have been behind the world - and Doctor Who has to be leading the world. So it was never a question in my mind. It was time."

So far, the 13th Doctor has a rainbow T-shirt, gold braces, high-waisted culottes and seems to have the same sense of fun as David Tennent's 10th Doctor. In the teaser clip, she changes Bradley Walsh's newspaper for a Beano.

Bradley ip one of three "friends" rather than companions, although the Tardis and the sonic screwdriver are back.
