ABC TV's Doctor Who — English actor Tom Baker — has a problem ...
He's always tripping over his scarf, a character trademark of the good doctor.
Not surprising really, because it's 5.5 metres long! Baker, 45, is in Brisbane today promoting the new series which starts here next Monday at 6.30 on Two.
He said the length of the green and brown "mustardy" colored appendage was an accident as the woman who made it used the entire amount of wool, instead of just part of it.
A towering 188 cms, Baker is in his fourth year as the Doctor which is entering its 16th year on BBC TV.
He said he wasn't tiring of the role, and he hoped the role wasn't getting tired of him!
Surveys reveal that Baker, of splendid English voice, is the most popular of the four actors to take the role in the science fantasy show.
Baker says its science fantasy not science fiction. "It's fantastical."
He admits liking fantasy roles and says that he'd one day like to play Captain Hook.
But his immediate workload is just around the corner.
"I start shooting a 41 week schedule of Dr. Who on March 15."
In that time he'll put down 26 half-hour episodes.. In the UK, Doctor Who is seen only once a week — at 6.15 on Saturday nights, a time, says Baker, which is important.
Few changes are planned for the new series — but one big one will be the Doctor's offsider.
"I've anew sidekick in latest series. She's Lalla Ward) (of the Duchess of Duke Street fame) who plays Romana."
Doctor Who has been fantastically successful worldwide and has, at times, a viewing audience in the U.K. of 12 million.
It has been sold to more than 22 countries, including much of South America.
